Kogi State Implements N72,500 New Minimum Wage for Workers

The Kogi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving workers’ welfare by approving a new minimum wage of N72,500 (Seventy-Two Thousand Five Hundred Naira) for workers. This represents a whopping 219.70% increase from the previous wage of N33,000 (Thirty-Three Thousand Naira).

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo announced that this new wage will come with consequential adjustments for all grade levels within the civil service. This is particularly good news for higher-grade workers, who can also expect a bump in their next payslip. Additionally, the Governor declared a one-year tax holiday on the new increments as part of his administration’s broader palliatives aimed at easing the impact of ongoing reforms on civil servants.

The Governor further assured retirees that their pensions will also see improvements once the relevant committees finalize their work. The new wage structure and adjustments, he emphasized, are effective immediately.

The wage increase follows the recommendations of an implementation committee chaired by Pastor Elijah Evinemi, the Kogi State Head of Service, which negotiated with organized labour on behalf of the state. The committee presented its report to Governor Ododo at the meeting held in the Conference Room of the Government House, leading to the wage approval.

Governor Ododo signed the new wage agreement on behalf of the state government, while the leadership of organized labour, including the chairpersons of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Joint Labour Unions in Kogi State, signed on behalf of the workers.

This agreement marks another milestone in the ongoing cooperation between the state government and organized labour in their quest for fair and balanced wages for Kogi workers. It also aligns with the broader effort led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to ensure states provide workers with a fairer deal in their basic take-home pay.

Governor Ododo praised the strong collaboration between the government and organized labour, which he credited for achieving today’s agreement without the usual conflict and distrust.

Earlier, on October 1st, Governor Ododo outlined steps his administration has already taken to enhance workers’ welfare, including ensuring 100% prompt salary payments to all state and local government employees, as well as teachers. He also highlighted that 100% pension payments are now the norm, while N100 million is released monthly to gradually settle unpaid gratuities inherited from previous administrations.
