First Renewable Energy Institution: A Game-Changer for Kogi State and Nigeria
The Federal Government, in partnership with the Kogi State Government, has laid the foundation for Nigeria’s first Renewable Energy Institution in Kogi State.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo led the groundbreaking ceremony for The Barefoot Renewable Energy Academy, alongside Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Director General of Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, at Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State.
Modeled after successful initiatives like Germany’s Renewable Energy Academy and the USA’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Academy is expected to have an impact on the state’s socio-economic development, including generating employment opportunities and increasing energy access.
Moreover, it will play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s energy transition, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating climate change.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Report of 2020, Africa has the potential to generate 1,000 GW of renewable energy by 2050.
However, gaps in research, investment, and technology harnessing pose challenges. The institution aims to address these gaps, thereby, leveraging Kogi State’s natural resources and focusing on innovative solutions in the renewable energy sector.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s administration has shown dedication to sustainable development by attracting this breakthrough and advancing the state’s development in science and technology.
The Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has further demonstrated a resolute dedication to renewable energy, recognizing its vast potential to catalyze economic growth and sustainable development.
