Governor Ododo Signs Series of Landmark Legislation in Kogi State, Emphasizes People-Oriented Governance Again

 

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State today signed seven significant bills into law, marking a turning point in his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and people-centered governance.

The new laws include a Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Kogi State Local Government Service Commission Law, 2024, a Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Kogi State Scholarship Board Edict, 2024, and a Law to Establish the Kogi State Electricity Market, the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission, 2024 and a Law to Repeal and Re-enact the Kogi State Mineral Resources Development Agency Law, 2024.

Others are a Law to Establish the Kogi State Anti-Corruption Agency, 2024, the Kogi State Commodity Exchange, Export Promotion, and Market Development Agency Law, 2024 as well as the Kogi State Information Technology Development Agency Law, 2024. In his address at the signing ceremony, Governor Ododo described the legislation as ‘people’s laws,’ emphasizing their direct impact on the lives of Kogi State residents.

The Kogi State helmsman noted that the new set of legislation would help the Government address loopholes in critical areas such as local government service, scholarships, electricity regulation, anti-corruption measures, commodity exchange, information technology development, and mineral resources management.

He highlighted the Kogi State Anti-Corruption Agency Law as a key instrument in combating corrupt practices, affirming his commitment to providing the agency with the necessary support to carry out its duties effectively. He also reiterated his administration’s stance against corruption, stating, ‘Let it be known that under my administration, nobody is above the law.’

Governor Ododo also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for opening up the electricity sector for States to participate more closely in providing energy, a critical component for accelerated development, to their people. He expressed his belief that the policy will revolutionize power generation and distribution in Nigeria and assured the people of Kogi State that his administration is now poised to leverage this opportunity to address the state’s power challenges.

The Governor also stressed the importance of education, pointing out that the newly-signed Kogi State Scholarship Law will help to provide financial assistance to indigent students. He praised President Tinubu’s Student Loan Scheme as a precursor to his own reforms in the area and commended the federal government’s firm resolve to support educational aspirations for Nigeria’s teeming youthful population.

The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf, commended the Assembly’s dedication to ensuring thorough and expert-informed legislation that can withstand the test of time. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to enacting laws that promote the overall development of Kogi State.

The signing ceremony, attended by members of the State House of Assembly and top government officials, signifies a promising new chapter in Kogi State’s governance under Governor Ododo’s leadership.
