How Former Governor Yahaya Bello Set The Stage For Modern Kogi State

Former Governor Yahaya Bello’s first journey to the throne of leadership may have come through divine Providence but his sagacious leadership aptitude and development mindedness brought him out of the cafe and set high above those who were hitherto occupants of the golden throne in Lugard House.

A celebral Accountant, former governor Yahaya Bello through his professional acumen set a working governance system and template in place on which his successor is working. You will recall that, on several occasions governor Yahaya Bello won best performing Governor’s awards and accolades from the World Bank for using an efficient economic system and mandated many other states to understudied the same economic blueprint under the watch of Governor Yahaya Bello.

Inarguably, governor Yahaya Bello appears to be one of the most underreported achieving governors in the history of Nigeria given his numerous achievements and his heart for impeccable performance. As you can see, his Excellency, Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo, our ebullient governor is standing on the shoulder of his predecessor and indeed he is performing so well following and established template.

Governor Yahaya Bello, fondly referred to as the “White Lion,” is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. As the 4th Executive Governor of Kogi State, he has left an indelible mark on the state’s history. Hailing from Kogi Central senatorial district, Governor Bello’s emergence in 2016 marked the beginning of a new era in Kogi State.

Under his leadership, Kogi State witnessed unprecedented growth and development. The state experienced robust infrastructural development, with numerous projects transforming the state’s landscape. Governor Bello’s commitment to youth inclusion in policy making and appointments empowered a new generation of leaders, ensuring a brighter future for the state. His implementation of 35% women inclusion in Kogi politics was a groundbreaking feat, never achieved in the state’s political history.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Governor Bello’s leadership was put to the test. While the world was in lockdown, Kogi State remained open, and his decision was later vindicated. His bold approach to governance and willingness to challenge the status quo have earned him recognition and admiration.

In 2023, when Nigeria faced hardship due to the Naira scarcity, Governor Bello, alongside other courageous leaders, approached the Supreme Court to seek justice for the masses. His efforts led to a landmark victory, and the Central Bank of Nigeria and federal government were held accountable.

Governor Bello’s courage extends beyond state politics. He made history as the first governor from North Central Nigeria to contest for the presidency, demonstrating his vision for a unified and prosperous Nigeria.

Throughout his tenure, Governor Bello has proven himself to be a go-getter, tackling challenges head-on and achieving remarkable success. His leadership style, characterized by transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness, has earned him widespread recognition and admiration.
