Kogi State Procures Relief Materials, Begins Distribution to Flood Victims as Mitigation Efforts Intensify
The Kogi State Government has commenced distributing relief materials to thousands of residents affected by the rising floodwaters along the Niger and Benue rivers. The proactive procurement of these materials underscores the government’s readiness to mitigate the impact of annual flooding in vulnerable communities.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, revealed that the relief supplies include essential foodstuffs—such as rice, semovita, and beverages—along with medications, mosquito nets, mattresses, and other household consumables. “This demonstrates that the orders were made well in advance, allowing for a swift response,” Fanwo stated.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is personally overseeing the flood response efforts through his Deputy, Comrade Joel Oyibo Salifu, who chairs the state’s Emergency and Disaster Response Committee. Distribution of the relief materials is set to cover all affected areas through a coordinated operation involving local councils, community leaders, and relevant agencies.
This swift action aligns with the government’s broader strategy of disaster preparedness, mitigation, and community resilience-building. Over the past eight years, the state has adopted a proactive approach to the predictable flooding season, working closely with federal agencies such as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to monitor river levels and forecast flood risks.
Leveraging real-time data, the government has implemented targeted evacuation protocols and resource mobilization strategies, ensuring that communities are not overwhelmed. A strong collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), as well as security and law enforcement agencies, further strengthens the state’s disaster management framework.
Mr. Fanwo emphasized that lessons from the devastating 2022 floods, which displaced thousands of residents and caused significant economic losses, have guided this year’s preparedness efforts.
The Kogi State Government has appealed to the Federal Government for infrastructure support, including the dredging of the Niger and Benue rivers and the construction of dams to better control seasonal water surges. Governor Ododo reiterated the importance of long-term adaptation strategies to combat the recurring challenges posed by climate change, calling for intergovernmental collaboration to achieve sustainable solutions.
He stressed that distributing relief materials is only one part of the administration’s multi-layered flood management strategy, which also includes community resilience programs and policy-driven flood adaptation measures.
In addition to government-led interventions, local governments and traditional institutions are playing crucial roles in their respective communities. The state’s decentralized response structure facilitates faster decision-making at the grassroots level, ensuring relief materials and essential services reach those in need without delays.
Governor Ododo has consistently urged community stakeholders and religious leaders to support evacuation efforts, emphasizing that their involvement fosters trust and smooth relocation to temporary shelters. Traditional rulers have been instrumental in disseminating accurate flood forecasts, helping reduce risks and enhance preparedness at the community level.
As the floodwaters continue to affect parts of the state, the ongoing relief distribution highlights Kogi State’s commitment to balancing immediate humanitarian needs with long-term resilience-building strategies. With the increasing threat of climate-related disasters, the administration’s focus on policy foresight, stakeholder collaboration, and strategic investments demonstrates its dedication to effective disaster management.
Governor Ododo’s administration aims to implement a sustainable framework that safeguards lives and livelihoods, reducing future vulnerability to seasonal floods and ensuring that Kogi remains prepared for any eventualities.
