National Disaster Management Receives Boost As Governor Ododo Receives Report of Technical Working Group
The National Economic Council (NEC) Ad Hoc Committee on Flood and Other Nature-Induced Disasters (Mitigation, Adaptation, Preparedness, and Response) held a crucial meeting today at the Kogi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. The committee, chaired by Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, convened to receive the final report from its Technical Working Group (TWG).
The official handover of the comprehensive report, which detailed findings and recommendations for better mitigation, adaptation, preparedness and response (MAPR) to the impact, specifically, of floods, erosion, drought and desertification across Nigeria marked the culmination of several weeks of dedicated work by the TWG. The report is expected to be foundational to the development of a national roadmap for proactive management of these nature-induced disasters for Nigeria.
Following the TWG’s presentation of the report, Governor Ododo formally accepted it on behalf of the NEC Ad Hoc Committee. In his remarks, he expressed the nation’s gratitude to the TWG, led by Alhaji Bello Mohammed Goronyo, the Honourable Minister of State for Water Resources, for their far-reaching work on the assignment. He emphasized the utility of their report to finding lasting solutions to the cyclic challenges posed to the safety and well-being of communities across the nation by adverse climatic events, starting from the ongoing 2024 rainy season.
He subsequently discharged the TWG from their duties, acknowledging the successful completion of their task. The Governor then entrusted the report to the Committee Secretariat, which will be responsible for refining and finalizing a comprehensive national roadmap based on the TWG’s findings which will be presented to the Vice President and the National Economic Council for further action and implementation.
The meeting was also attended by the Special Adviser to the President on NEC and Climate Change, experts from the ministry of water resources, ministry of environment and sanitation and the Kogi State Director-General of Research and Development. Others in attendance were the heads or representatives of various technical agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) among others, and other members of both the TWG and the NEC Ad Hoc Committee.
